Watts to Amps Calculator

Convert watts to amps for 120 V, 230/240 V, 12 V DC or any voltage, single or three phase, with power factor.

How to use it

  1. Enter the wattage and the circuit voltage.
  2. Use power factor 1 for resistive loads (heaters, kettles); 0.8-0.95 for motors.
  3. Compare the result with the breaker rating: continuous loads should stay under 80% of it.

How it works

Amps = watts ÷ (volts × power factor) for DC/single phase; for three phase, amps = watts ÷ (√3 × volts × PF). A 1,800 W load on 120 V draws 15 A - the full rating of a 15 A circuit, so above the 80% guideline for continuous use.

FAQ

How many amps is 1500 watts?

12.5 A at 120 V, or about 6.5 A at 230 V.

How many watts can a 15 amp circuit handle?

1,800 W at 120 V maximum; about 1,440 W for continuous loads (80%).
