Default rate 17¢/kWh ≈ recent US residential average (EIA). Use the price per kWh on your own bill, including delivery charges, for an accurate figure.

How to use it

  1. Find the wattage on the appliance label or manual (or use a plug-in energy meter for the real figure).
  2. Enter how many hours a day it runs.
  3. Enter your price per kWh from your bill.

How it works

kWh = watts × hours ÷ 1,000. Cost = kWh × price. A 1,500 W heater running 4 hours uses 6 kWh a day, about $1.02 at 17¢/kWh, or roughly $31 a month.

Devices with thermostats or compressors (fridges, AC, heaters on a thermostat) cycle on and off, so their average draw is lower than the label maximum.

FAQ

How do I calculate electricity cost?

Multiply watts by hours used, divide by 1,000 to get kWh, then multiply by your price per kWh.

How much is 1 kWh?

It depends on your tariff; the US residential average has been roughly 16-18¢ in 2024-2026, while many European prices are higher.
